The Canadian UTI Study
funded by CIHR and PHAC
Information about UTIs - the Mayo Clinic website
Purpose of the study
Urinary tract infections (UTIs), also known as bladder infections or cystitis, often affect young, otherwise healthy women. Fifty to 60% of women will have a UTI at some point in their lives. Most UTIs are caused by a bacterium called E. coli. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sources of the E. coli that cause UTIs. You are being invited to participate in this study because you have been diagnosed with a UTI.
Am I eligible?
Eligible women must be:
- 18 or older
- Not pregnant
- Not diabetic
- Must not have urinary tract abnormalities
You may only participate once.
Why participate?
As well as contributing to the understanding of UTIs in Canada, our study will allow University Health Clinics to improve treatment of UTIs by providing information on antibiotic resistance in the community. This will allow doctors to prescribe the antibiotics that are most likely to help students at your clinic. Also, you will have a chance to win one of five new iPads!
How do I participate?
Step 1: You have provided a urine sample at your Student Health Services Clinic. It will be used for your diagnosis, and if you give your permission by completing the survey, it will be sent to the main research team at McGill for use in this study.
Step 2: You have picked up a pamphlet with your unique login token at your Clinic.
Step 3: Shortly after providing a urine sample (ideally within 1 week), follow the link to the online dietary questionnaire.
Step 4: Use your unique login token from the pamphlet to sign in to the questionnaire.
Step 5: Confirm your eligibility.
Step 6: Learn more about the study, and decide whether or not to participate by providing your informed consent. Click here for a preview of the consent form.
Step 7: Complete the questionnaire.
Step 8: Enter for a chance to win one of five new iPads!
The questionnaire is hosted by a secure web server. Your responses and confidentiality are protected.
Participation is entirely voluntary: You will receive the same care from your health clinic whether or not you complete the questionnaire.

About us
The study team includes doctors and staff at clinics at the University of British Columbia, the University of Guelph, the University of Toronto, McGill University, and St. Mary’s University. Our lead scientist is Professor Amee Manges at McGill University. Dr. Manges focused on East Asian Studies and then Public Health before turning her attention to Epidemiology – the study of illness in communities. Her lab at McGill investigates the causes of E. coli infections. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and three sons, and bikes to work rain or shine.
